Unwillingness by leaders to make decisions can be crippling to an organisation and can have significant impacts on both the culture and business performance. Below we will look at six (6) tips to help you prepare for making hard decisions. The teams were kept to a tight deadline as it was considered there was a window of opportunity in which a decision to invest needed to be made. The recommendations were presented to executive management on multiple occasions and each time, the executive team would simply raise more questions but never rejected the opportunity outright nor did they provide feedback as to why they weren’t committing to the opportunity. As time went by, the window of opportunity did actually close. Now, perhaps the executive team had some solid reasons as to why they didn’t support the new opportunity, however, think about all the time and effort (spent by a large part of the organisation) that went into repeated reviews that could have been directed towards other opportunities if a clear decision had been communicated. Also, consider the impact on the morale of the teams as they continually got knocked back without any solid feedback as to the reasons why. Each member on the leadership team played their role in engaging their own teams to support the development of a series of recommendations. Hard decisions may be required in relation to business challenges or perhaps a personnel issue that you need to address. Either way, these hard decisions need to be made and communicated in a timely fashion. Its important to note that sometimes the act of not making a decision is actually making a decision. How can that be, you might ask? I can recall a number of occasions where I have observed that to be the case. One such example was a leadership team who had been working on a new opportunity to increase the profitability of the business. It was a great example of collaboration across multiple teams. One of the many skills that makes a great leader is their ability to make tough decisions. Many of the day-to-day decisions you will need to make may be reasonably straight forward, however there will be times when more complicated issues or scenarios arise. You will need to be equipped to make a call, sometimes in the absence of sufficient information. In this article, we will focus on the eighth skill, “Making Hard Decisions”.
